Middle School Team
Heather Ostrander teaches science and STEM here at RCS. She has a Master's Degree and has been teaching for more than 14 years. She likes cooking, hiking, volleyball and spending time with her family. She strives to one day be a bee keeper.
Roger Kohler is the Math teacher for the Middle School at RCS. He holds a B.A. in Studio Art from California State University, Fullerton and a M.Ed. in Mathematics from Westfield State University. He loves teaching and is excited to be at Richmond Consolidated School. When not at RCS, Mr. Kohler spends time with his 2 kids and also serves on the Sandisfield Board of Health and Planning Board. He also is a board member to the Sandisfield Historical Society.
Ms. Rachel Kanz
Rachel Kanz is currently teaching ELA 8 and Humanities 7. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary English Education for the State University of New York College at Buffalo and Masters of Arts in Humanities from California State University at Dominguez Hills. Her graduate focus of study Environmental Studies/Nature Literature.
Ms. Kanz has been at RCS for five years. In addition to her teaching responsibilities, Ms. Kanz has lead the Knitting Club, the Game Club, Student Council, Coordinated School Dances and planned the grades 7/8 trip- just not all at once! This year she is looking forward to applying the methods of teaching writing that she studied at the Columbia Teacher's College Writing Institute.
When not in the classroom during the school year, Mrs. Kanz can be found right here in Richmond, reading, cooking, or on a mountain skiing or hiking. She spends her summers traveling to the places she teaches about! This summer, to enhance her Ancient History curriculum, she explored the pre-history found here in the Northeast.
Mrs. Sharon Renfrew has been a 5/6 grade teacher for over 20 years. She loves teaching children to explore the world through lessons in geography, history and literacy. Mrs. Renfrew’s love of books, world travel and her recent study of local history helps bring excitement to her classroom. She also works as a Curriculum Support teacher, developing lesson plans and working with teachers to implement Common Core State Standards at Richmond Consolidated School.
Mrs. Renfrew holds a Bachelor’s degree in Education from North Adams State College, a Bachelor’s degree from Youngstown State University in Social Work, and a Master’s degree in Education in curriculum development with a special focus in writing and literacy from Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts. She also has logged dozens of graduate courses in History, Social Planning, Community Organization, and Economics from the University of Minnesota, Fitchburg State College, and Western New England College.
Mrs. Renfrew is married to Dr. Bruce Renfrew and is the proud mother of two children. During summer months, she loves taking Graduate classes in History, reading great literature and spending quiet nights listening to the loons living at Miles Pond in Vermont.
Mr. Bell-Devaney is a special education teacher at Richmond Consolidated School. He holds a Masters of Education degree in Special Education from American International College in Springfield, MA and a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Alberta, Canada. He has worked with children with special needs in a variety of settings and taught ESL in Japan and Canada for many years. He is also a graduate of the mindfulness-based stress reduction teacher training program at the UMass Medical School’s Stress Reduction Center. He enjoys writing, painting, and many sports, including squash, ice hockey, and mountain biking, but more than anything loves spending time with his wife, son, and dog.
